How to Make the Most of Your Tourism Academy Experience

Tourism Academy 2026 is headed to sunny Jacksonville, Florida and with three days of sessions, speakers, and networking opportunities, there’s no shortage of ways to learn, grow, and connect. Whether it’s your first time attending or your fifth, here are a few tips to help you make the most of your experience.

1. Plan Your Agenda Ahead of Time

Before you even pack your bags, spend some time reviewing the conference agenda. Tourism Academy offers three main learning tracks:

  • CRM Training – Perfect for anyone looking to better understand or maximize the iDSS platform. If you’re new or want to sharpen your skills, this is the track for you.
  • CRM Advanced – Designed for intermediate and advanced users ready to tackle deeper functionality and strategy.
  • Marketing & Web Strategy – Tailored for those focused on storytelling, website performance, partner engagement, and creative campaign ideas.

Consider what you want to take away from the week. Are you hoping to launch your first email marketing campaign? Learn how to budget for your DMO’s size? Or discover new ways to engage your community? Building your schedule in advance helps you make intentional choices about where to spend your time and ensures you don’t miss any must-see sessions or keynotes.

2. Take Notes, Ask Questions, and Connect with Speakers

Every session is an opportunity to learn something new so make it count. Take notes (digital or handwritten), jot down ideas, and don’t be afraid to raise your hand. Stay after a session to chat with the speaker, swap business cards, or share how their presentation resonated with you. These conversations often spark some of the best ideas and collaborations long after the conference ends.

And just a reminder: the presentation slides will be made available after the conference on the Tempest Community, so don't fret if you didn't snag a photo of a slide or want to revisit a visual.

3. Make the Most of Networking Breaks

Between sessions, you’ll find plenty of chances to meet fellow attendees. Use these moments to start conversations, ask questions, and share experiences. Discuss common challenges, exchange vendor recommendations, or compare marketing tactics. You might even meet your new “DMO pen pal” - someone you can check in with throughout the year for ideas, support, or simply a friendly brainstorm.

4. Schedule Time with a Tempest Expert

Want to take a deeper dive into your CRM setup or digital strategy? Schedule a one-on-one meeting with our Web, Growth, iDSS, or Destination Signals team. You can also stop by the Scholars Desk to chat directly with a Tempest expert. These sessions are perfect for troubleshooting, brainstorming new strategies, or exploring ways to implement what you’ve learned on-site.

5. Read the Pre-Conference Emails

In the weeks leading up to the event, keep an eye on your inbox! Our emails are packed with resources, sneak peeks, and opportunities from early bird discounts to activity sign-ups and speaker highlights. Reading them helps you stay informed and get the most value from your registration.

6. Pack Smart and Stay Comfortable

Conference rooms can run chilly, so bring a light sweater or jacket. Comfortable shoes are a must! You’ll be walking between sessions and events. And since we’ll be in Jacksonville, make room for beach gear if you plan to explore outside of conference hours.

7. Explore the Host City

Don’t spend your entire trip inside the hotel! Jacksonville offers miles of pristine beaches, award-winning golf courses, and a great dining scene. Take time to see what makes this city shine, because that experience is part of what makes Tourism Academy so memorable each year.

8. Stay Hydrated and Energized

With so much to see and do, it’s easy to forget the basics. Drink plenty of water (stations will be available throughout the conference), grab snacks when you can, and pace yourself. A well-fueled mind is key to retaining all that valuable Tourism Academy knowledge.

9. Keep an Open Mind (and a Sense of Humor)

Learning is serious business, but it should also be fun. Try sessions outside your usual wheelhouse, introduce yourself to new people, and remember ... do not pet the wildlife (drinking and swamping is never a good idea!)

10. Bring Your DMO Gear for the Destination Marketplace

The Destination Marketplace is back! Pack a few extra items that show off your destination’s spirit. Think branded swag, local treats, or signature giveaways. It’s a fun way to trade gear, spark conversations, and connect with other DMOs while showcasing what makes your community unique.

See You in Jacksonville!

Tourism Academy 2026 is all about connection, collaboration, and creativity. With a little planning and an open mindset, you’ll walk away with new ideas, lasting relationships, and a fresh perspective on what’s possible in destination marketing.
